► „Semana Santa“ - Easter in Spain |
Towns and villages in the land of Valencia have preserved one oftheir most deeply-routed religious customs over the years: the festivities of the Holy Week. From 28 March to 5 April impressive processions take place in many municipalities, with statues of saints being carried through the streets as for example in Teulada-Moraira on Maundy Thursday the Procesión del Silencio (procession of silence), on Good Friday the Procesión del Santo Entierro (procession of the holy burial) and on Easter Sunday the Procesión del Encuentro (procession of encounter). These days are also particularly impressive in Murcia or in the docklands of Valencia, where they are called the Semana Santa Marinera. |

► Now some of the best and most famous festivities of the Costa Blanca are being celebrated |
In the last week of April Benissa celebrates its festival in honourof their patron the Puríssima Xiqueta with a solemn opening, coronation of the fiesta queen, processions, concerts and fireworks. The last evenings and nights people meet for the bull runs in the streets, the so-called Bous al Carrer. The Moros y Cristianos festival has become one of the most popular and well worth seeing in the land of Valencia. The historical events of the conquest of our region by the moors and the subsequent reconquest by the christian armies are being re-enacted. They are of particular interest in the coastal towns, such as in Moraira from 10 to 13 June, where the spectacular night-landing of the conquerors at the Playa de l'Ampolla beach, the floral offerings and the splendid parades are a prime attraction year after year. Experience magical St. John‘s Night, La noche de San Juan, one of the most lively celebrations along the coast. On 23 June Midsummer is celebrated and countless bonfires enlighten the shortest night of the year. To chase away the evil spirits of winter, loud firecrackers and the traditional bonfires are lit - they are a symbol for the burning of the old to make place for the new at the beginning of summer. In coastal regions people wade through the water to cleanse themselves and throw three objects into the sea: a flower for love, a coin for prosperity and a fruit for health. The bravest then jump over the bonfires. |
